During our March Markets, renowned and fabulous interior designer Denise McGaha stopped by to share a few of her tips that she uses to keep her clients happy through her work at Denise McGaha Interiors – and we can’t help but share her wisdom!
 
Denise has more than 15 years of experience in construction and interior design, with a degree in economics and a background in business. This being said, we’re always proud to partner with Denise and were especially happy to have her present her seminar “Designing with a Deadline,” featuring her proven method of creating projects with a timeline resulting in faster turnaround, happier clients and higher revenue potential, at Dallas Market. Here are the highlights!
 
 
 
It began with a quote – “The price of anything is the amount of life you exchange for it.” –Henry Thoreau. Up until a near death experience four years ago, Denise had always run her business by a deadline, but not particularly her personal life. But it was this life-changing moment that helped her realize the priority she placed on the truly special moments of life. After her recovery, she began the ritual of planning her year in advance – on a deadline – to ensure she effectively used the time she spent working, while dedicating as much free time as possible to her loved ones.
 
Although her design process has evolved throughout her career, Denise explained that it’s imperative to start with the end in mind. After setting task-based deadlines, she selects her team and establishes partnerships with them – giving everyone a copy of the timeline they’re held to throughout the project. This sets expectations from day one and gives her strong negotiation power when contractors don’t meet them.
 
Denise quickly finds quality inspiration alongside her clients using secret Pinterest boards and an impressive database of sources she’s collected over nearly two decades. She also utilizes Dallas Market Center’s vast designer resources, including our antique one-of-a-kinds and art galleries with in-stock and commissioned work offerings.
 
 
As for her team, everyone at Denise McGaha Interiors is on the deadline bandwagon. At staff meetings, they review their shared calendar at least 6 weeks out, which includes all of their project task points. They’re inspired by one of Denise’s favorite quotes – “The way a team plays as a whole determines its success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don’t play together, the club won’t be worth a dime.” –Babe Ruth
 
The overall theme to keeping her clients happy? Wanting their honest opinion! Denise would rather have her clients enraged with one of her ideas than hide their opinions. She closed by adding, “Being able to honestly use the phrases ‘on time’ and ‘on budget’ help too, of course!”
